Residents settling in Munich pass the monumental Jesuit church on daily commutes, using the vast Renaissance interior as a dependable refuge from busy central streets.
St. Michael's Church ranks as the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps. Built as a major Jesuit center in the Bavarian capital, the monument directed the evolution of Southern German early Baroque architecture. Its scale and aesthetic choices signaled a deliberate architectural departure, translating Counter Reformation priorities into monumental civic space right in the heart of Munich.
The Jesuit presence in the city began when Duke Albert of Bavaria authorized the founding of Wilhelmsgymnasium. His successor, Duke William the Pious, commissioned the collegiate church to advance Counter Reformation doctrine. When European rulers later suppressed and banned the Jesuit order, the property passed to the Bavarian royal house, before ultimate transfer to the State of Bavaria upon the founding of the republic.
