About the place

The urban park was conceived as a public green space and military garden rather than a private royal retreat.

Elector Charles Theodore commissioned the expansive grounds following military reform proposals by Sir Benjamin Thompson. The initial scheme replaced former royal hunting woodlands north of the Schwabinger gate with agricultural plots to train soldiers in farming during peacetime. Landscape gardener Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell shaped the parkland after English garden design traditions, creating continuous open public parkland.

Seasonal flooding from the Isar once threatened the low-lying hunting terrain until engineer Anton von Riedl built a protective river wall known as the Riedl-Damm. Early park developments incorporated specialised institutions, including sheep pastures, cattle farms, and a veterinary school. That veterinary foundation survived the closure of the early farming schools and evolved into the veterinary faculty of the university.

Reinhard von Werneck and Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell expanded the layout from central Munich to the northeastern city boundaries. For daily commuters and long-term residents, the continuous paths form an unpaved transit axis connecting residential quarters with university facilities. The historic gateway on Veterinaerstrasse remains a functional entrance point linking academic buildings directly to the park network.
