About the place

The hall pioneered vineyard seating to eliminate visual and acoustic barriers between the orchestra and the audience.

Hans Scharoun designed the hall to replace the previous home of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, which bombing destroyed during the war. The asymmetrical, tentlike structure abandoned the traditional shoebox layout in favor of a pentagonal auditorium. Rising terraces encircle the central stage from every direction, pioneering the vineyard arrangement that later inspired venues across Australia, Europe, and North America.

Beyond classical orchestral programs, the auditorium established a history of celebrated jazz performances, with live recordings produced by Dave Brubeck and Miles Davis. A serious fire caused by welding work once cut through the roof, prompting firefighters to pour water and foam across the building. The internal auditorium escaped major harm, permitting the concert schedule to resume promptly with visiting youth ensembles.
