German Museum of Technology: what's nearby, how to get there and when to go · 2026

Residents in Kreuzberg treat the former Anhalter freight yard around the complex as a neighborhood route, while working through the vast rail roundhouses and aviation halls demands multiple afternoon visits rather than a quick stop.

About the place

German Museum of Technology occupies an expansive former freight yard in Kreuzberg. The grounds preserve industrial heritage through massive railway roundhouses, maritime halls, and aviation hangars.

The institution continues the lineage of the earlier Royal Museum of Traffic and Construction, establishing its permanent base on the former rail freight yard of Anhalter Bahnhof in Kreuzberg. Rail transit formed the original core of the collections. Surviving locomotive roundhouses and depot offices anchor the outdoor grounds, giving the site an industrial yard atmosphere rather than that of a conventional gallery.

Subsequent extensions broadened the focus toward maritime navigation and aviation. A vintage US Air Force Raisin Bomber transport aircraft mounted atop the modern building complex serves as an unmistakable urban landmark, visible across the district and from the Fernsehturm. The facility also houses the Spectrum science center alongside vast installations of historical manufacturing machinery.
