About the place

The vanished government palace on Wilhelmstraße leaves an empty footprint beneath postwar apartment blocks.

The site marks the historical seat of the national chancellery during the German Reich, established inside an aristocratic city residence on Wilhelmstraße. The building originally belonged to Adolf Friedrich Count von der Schulenburg and later housed Prince Antoni Radziwiłł before imperial administrators converted the rooms into executive offices. The expanded complex directed German government operations across successive regimes.

Wartime combat and heavy bombardment left both the original palace and the newer government wing heavily ruined, prompting total demolition in the aftermath of the conflict. Modern residents moving into the surrounding Mitte quarter encounter no monumental facade or reconstructed colonnade. Standard residential apartment buildings and ordinary paved parking courts now occupy the ground where the chancellery once operated.
