About the place

Großer Tiergarten forms the green core of the capital, functioning as an expansive forest preserve surrounded by central government and cultural districts.

The park originated as an enclosed hunting ground for the Electors of Brandenburg outside the old defensive walls. Royal decree later ordered architect Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff to demolish the perimeter fences and introduce ornamental ponds, baroque mazes, and screened salons where visitors could converse away from the main avenues. Landscape designer Peter Joseph Lenné subsequently transformed the formal grounds into an open park.

Civic life shaped the interior as Huguenot refugees received permission to pitch tents and sell refreshments along the paths. Political reformers gathered on these lawns to demand the abolition of state press censorship, and Bellevue Palace arose within the grounds. Today commuters rely on the perimeter S-Bahn stops at Berlin Tiergarten and Berlin Bellevue, cycling along quiet watercourses to bypass crowded motor boulevards.
