About the place

The Siegessäule stands at the center of Tiergarten as a nineteenth-century triumphal column.

Heinrich Strack designed the monument to commemorate Prussian battlefield victories over Denmark, Austria, and France. A polished red granite base supports a columned hall with decorative glass mosaics and sandstone drums adorned with captured cannon barrels. Friedrich Drake sculpted the gilded Victoria statue perched at the summit. The structure originally stood facing the Reichstag before urban planners relocated it to the Großer Stern roundabout.

Pedestrians access the monument island through underground tunnels designed to bypass heavy roundabout traffic. An interior spiral staircase leads visitors up to an open viewing platform directly beneath the golden goddess. In modern culture, the site shifted from military symbolism to civic assembly, hosting major techno dance gatherings and annual pride demonstrations. A longstanding queer city publication also shares its name with the landmark.
