About the place

Place de la Bastille marks the site of the demolished royal fortress that once guarded eastern Paris and symbolized monarchical authority.

French monarchs originally ordered the fortress built to defend Paris before Cardinal Richelieu converted the complex into a state prison. The stronghold held religious dissenters, seditious authors, and individuals detained by royal decree. During the French Revolution, armed crowds and mutinous royal soldiers besieged the compound, forcing its garrison to surrender before workers razed the entire structure.

No visible remnants of the medieval prison survive on the modern plaza. Following the demolition, authorities turned the grounds into a square dedicated to liberty. Napoleon planned a colossal bronze elephant cast from captured cannons, though workers only erected a plaster model that was later removed. The July Column was built in its place under Louis Philippe, and the area sustained damage during the Paris Commune.
