Residents near Île de la Cité trade quiet residential side streets for security perimeters and constant crowd management outside the cathedral gates.
A Gallo-Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter originally occupied the ground, evidenced by the Pillar of the Boatmen found beneath the floor. The earlier Christian basilica of Saint Étienne stood on the site until Bishop Maurice de Sully ordered its replacement. Masons built the new Gothic structure using limestone quarried in Vexin and shipped along the river.
The cathedral housed major Christian relics, including the crown of thorns and wood fragments from the cross, while Sainte-Chapelle was being completed. Patriarch Heraclius of Jerusalem called for a crusade from the choir while stonework continued overhead. A catastrophic fire subsequently consumed the timber roof structure and felled the spire, triggering an extensive rebuilding project before the sanctuary reopened.
