About the place

The monumental arch anchors the western terminus of the historic ceremonial axis, where major Parisian avenues converge into a massive roundabout.

Commissioned by Napoleon following the victory at Austerlitz and completed under Louis Philippe, the stone monument stands on the right bank of the river. Its pillars display carved reliefs and the engraved names of French military commanders and battlefield triumphs. Beneath the primary vault, an eternal flame burns above the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Official military processions assemble along this ground for the Bastille Day parade.

The monument anchors Place Charles de Gaulle, where broad avenues radiate outward across bordering arrondissements. Relentless vehicular traffic circles the plaza without lane markings, turning the surface into a notorious barrier for daily foot travel. Neighborhood residents rely on underground pedestrian passages to bypass the roadway. Looking westward along the historical axis, the structure aligns with the modern arch at La Défense.
