Tenants around Rue de Lyon trade quiet evenings for immediate connections across southeastern rail networks and cross-town underground lines.
Baron Haussmann oversaw the initial boardwalk terminus, titled the Embarcadère de chemin de fer de Paris à Montereau. Rail operators abandoned plans to connect Place de la Bastille, creating Rue de Lyon instead. Engineers raised the tracks onto an embankment to prevent Seine river flooding. Architect Marius Toudoire later rebuilt the passenger halls for the World's Fair, adding an ornate corner clock tower.
Inside the passenger concourse, painter Jean-Baptiste Olive produced an expansive fresco depicting destination cities reachable by train. The terminal also houses Le Train Bleu, an elaborately decorated restaurant serving travellers and dining patrons. Today the hub handles high passenger volumes across suburban express lines and mainline routes, including direct Frecciarossa international connections to Milan.
