Hello, New York!

In August, two friends and I decided to take a trip to New York! I was in New York on the very first night when I arrived. Now, we were planning to walk around all the city's landmarks! We asked our employer for two days off and set off on our journey! What you need to do in advance! (All based on personal experience) If you work in a hotel, there might be a discount for employees. You need to talk to your employer - that's how we managed to book a hotel with a 50% discount. Also, for those working in the food industry, there might be discounts within the restaurant/cafe chain. Plan your route in advance. Which places you want to visit and how far apart they are. This is a must to make sure you see everything and don't regret missing out on something at the end. It's better to book a hotel/hostel in the center. Because taking the subway is difficult - there are many lines, they are confusing, and you might not figure it out right away. We lost a whole hour because we went to the wrong district. The closer you are to the center, the more expensive taxis are. A single ride can cost from 40 to 60 dollars. Check for free ferries/museums/exhibitions. I didn't do this in advance, but by pure luck, we managed to get on a free ferry. We saw Manhattan from the side, and the view was simply divine. Definitely keep in mind that moving around the city takes a lot of energy. You get tired twice as fast, so you will need more food. Therefore, budget money for food and water so that you can be comfortable and not push your body too hard! During our mini-trip, I visited Times Square. I had dinner at Hard Rock Café, saw the memorial fountain at the site of the Twin Towers, took a ferry to another island, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, visited the Statue of Liberty, and made a wish on Wall Street. I was breathless from the reality of it all! My dreams were coming true literally every hour.

I want to be part of it, New York, New York

New York, for me it is like the city of the entire world. It is huge, words just cannot describe how much. When I arrived there for the first time, I didn't even need time to blend into this city; it felt like I was born there. New York is definitely on my list of favorite cities. Many people like it, but some feel the opposite. When you walk around it, you involuntarily want to walk like you're in a music video. Sit at Starbucks on Fifth Avenue and discuss important business. And at night, ride the subway, listen to music, and not think about anyone. A city where you want to get lost. Being there, I thought about how great it would be to spend Christmas here. I can only imagine what the New Year's atmosphere is like here. While I'm young, I would like to live there, get lost in the hustle and bustle, party in clubs, and attend business meetings. And in my old age, move somewhere closer to the ocean. By the way, I have been to New York twice. And both times alone. But that didn't make my trip worse or boring, except that there was no one to take photos (just kidding). As a true fan of "Sex and the City," the first thing I did was go to Carrie Bradshaw's house; I walked all over Manhattan, but I found it! Yes, that staircase, just like in the movies, even that little street is so cozy. I'm leaving the address in case you are as much of a series fan as I am. 64 Perry Street I didn't have a specific route as such. I just went wherever my eyes took me, and you know, along the way I met all the famous places like the Brooklyn Bridge, Chinatown, Wall Street, the 9/11 Memorial, and I even saw the Statue of Liberty from afar. In New York, I rented a room. There are many options for housing, but I recommend Airbnb: you download it, find accommodation, pay, and live. It's all very simple. There is an alternative, the well-known Booking.com; there are also many options, but not always affordable. The only thing is, choose your neighborhood carefully. Of course, Manhattan or Brooklyn would be best, but under no circumstances the Bronx. You understand, the city is huge, so there are many ghetto areas. Another option is Queens. Personally, I lived there; the neighborhood is not bad, it's just a bit far, but it is close to JFK airport. For me, it was convenient because I was flying out from there. In my memories, New York is over a million steps first and foremost, and then people with a crazy pace of life, homeless people on the sidewalks, street food, and a million tourists. But even despite all this, it's such a unique, such a beloved New York.

NEW YORK

After a month, it was time for my first travels. My most desired city was NYC. That was exactly where I dreamed of celebrating my birthday. Round-trip bus tickets from Peter Pan cost $140. New York made an incredible impression on me. It is a city that charms you from the very first minutes. It mesmerizes with the scale of its buildings and structures, amazes with its frantic rhythm, the incredible flow of people, and the contrast expressed in the combination of luxury life with marginalized people sleeping on the streets and piles of trash. New York is a real concrete jungle. Central Park is probably one of the few places with greenery and trees. Overall, I was delighted with the city. Must-visit places in NYC (with addresses): *TIP FOR FUTURE PARTICIPANTS: to make it easier to navigate in unfamiliar places, download offline maps) Excursion “Panoramic view from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building” - $41 (20 W 34th St, New York) One-hour ferry tour to the Statue of Liberty - $30. One of the most affordable. Includes arrival at the destination, a minute stop, and return to the pier. National September 11 Memorial & Museum. A complex built on the site of the destroyed World Trade Center (180 Greenwich St, New York) Brooklyn Bridge (Brooklyn Bridge, New York, NY 10038) Central Park (Central park) Times Square (Manhattan, NY 10036) Manhattan District 5th Avenue (a street where boutiques of famous designers are located; a symbol of American prestige and luxury) Wall Street — financial center (Wall Street) Grand Central Terminal (89 E 42nd St, New York) Broadway. Here, among the skyscrapers, are the offices of the largest American and global corporations. (Broadway) Rockefeller Center — a place known for the fact that the very same Christmas tree is installed there annually;). (45 Rockefeller Plaza, New York) St. Patrick's Cathedral (5th Ave, New York, NY 10022)

I woke up in New York....

The long-awaited day has finally arrived, my suitcase is packed... I am incredibly happy and filled with anticipation for what is to come... On May 24, 2017, I flew the Ufa-Moscow-New York route. Strangely enough, I ended up there on the same day... Already at the airport, I was overwhelmed with emotions because, firstly, I was living the same day twice, and I couldn't quite grasp where I was. This is it - the city of freedom, the city that had been on my iPhone case for 4 years, the city that everyone on the planet dreams of visiting at least once. Unlike many students arriving here, I was very lucky that my former classmate lives in New York. Naturally, I planned everything in advance and was greeted with open arms! At the airport, we took a taxi to Brooklyn, where she lives (a nice part of Brooklyn, not the one you're imagining). I spent only 2 days in this city, and to everyone's surprise, that was enough for me to see all its sights, except for the Statue of Liberty. The weather, unfortunately, wasn't great, but that didn't stop us, and we walked at least 20 km a day. You should have seen me when I ended up in Downtown Manhattan. It's an unreal feeling when you see such beauty. These aren't just tall buildings; it's incredibly beautiful architecture. And so these days flew by... It's time to move on... And there is more to come...

Inception

Good day to you :) Almaty Airport. June 2nd. 9 AM. I never imagined what it would be like to fly so far away from my loved ones, to the other side of the world. And yet, my dream came true - I am just a few meters from passport control! The internal struggle between joy and sadness didn't leave me until the first step onto the plane's ramp. This is it! Off to chase my American dream! :) My companion was a childhood friend who was the initiator of our trip. Back in March, some guys from the coveted NYC who happened to be among my Instagram followers kindly offered to meet us upon arrival. Dangerous, risky? Perhaps, but they were our own people, fellow countrymen. And so, having desperately slept through the entire flight, waiting for sleepless walks through the night "city of dreams," we finally arrived. Honestly, not expecting to see our newly minted guides. But then the door opens, and two breathless guys are scanning the airport hall... We hadn't even left the building when a completely new scent hit our noses: heavy, yet somehow familiar. New York spread its evening embrace. Of course, on the way, we couldn't believe our eyes: skyscrapers, buildings, people, highways, the Brooklyn Bridge... No matter how detailed I describe it, everyone will have their own bouquet of enthusiastic emotions :) Destination: a restaurant. It was completely unexpected, having arrived in America, to see a menu in Russian and mugs with national ornaments :) Yes, this is all Brooklyn. Not having had time to miss "our" food, we wondered why exactly here. The answer was: "By the end of the summer, you'll start going crazy without our dishes." Shrugging our shoulders, we didn't argue. After parting ways with the guys, we took a taxi towards Manhattan... Driving along the avenues, littered with hundreds of shops and cafes, I silently marveled at how familiar everything seemed... Surely everyone has had that feeling? Apparently, it's all the influence of Hollywood movies. After walking around, we were quite tired and went to a hotel in the Queens area. In the morning, we overslept breakfast at the hotel and headed to a nearby grocery store. How pleasing it was to the eye to see small, bright, and so cozy houses along the street. But Queens is a more "African American" area, so at first, it was a little scary. To avoid living on the outskirts of the city, book hotels and hostels in advance. We took about an hour to get to Manhattan by subway. But every time, returning after the huge metropolis to our secluded and quiet area, we felt at home :) The following two days in NY were spent in unity with the city itself and its residents. The free and welcoming mentality of Americans will win the heart of any resident of any post-Soviet state. And that is very encouraging :) Excluding the details about exploring New York, I will add that we were in search of relatively cheap tickets on Greyhound to the coastal town of Myrtle Beach, SC. I repeat, book everything in advance. Ticket found! $75, 15 hours, 4 transfers. Given the frantic pace of life in NY, we slept peacefully for almost the entire bus ride.

Emilia Pivtoratskaia on Instagram: "how I spent the summer of my dreams in America?🇺🇸 exactly a year ago by pure chance I learned about the «Work and Travel» program - a unique opportunity and cultural exchange for students! After a month of studying all the details, I decided to apply. Already on April 9, I received the cherished «your visa have been approved» in Yerevan and at that moment my life changed dramatically lots of anticipation, packing, the flight, and then, finally, I arrive in the city of my dreams - NYC! Arriving in Manhattan, I quickly checked into a hostel and ran off to wander around the city! The moment I walked into Central Park, I was so overwhelmed with emotions that I was literally crying with happiness, finally fully realizing where I was Then the road to my workplace for the next few months, gaining confidence in my English, a huge number of new meetings and acquaintances with people from different parts of the world, and then the most interesting part - traveling around America!🗽 I went to New York several times, visited Boston and Cambridge, traveled almost the entire West Coast, visiting Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and other cities, fulfilled a childhood dream and saw Hogwarts in Florida with my own eyes, bought myself new tech and my first designer bag, and the cherry on top was celebrating my birthday in the city of my dreams! this summer definitely became for me one of the most vivid events that have ever happened in my life, it is an incredible experience and emotions that I received and that will forever remain in my heart🥹💔 the main thing I realized — everything is possible if you really want it! don't be afraid to take risks, friends, perhaps it is precisely this step that you take that will become the key on the way to your dream! thank you @workandtravelspb and @iec.workandtravel , for helping make mine come true🫶🏻" Video: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DRr-9YuiIaF/?igsh=MXdpYW03c2E2YXBpNg==

New-York

New York is an endless topic of conversation, a special world that, it seemed to me, lives by its own rules. It is also the most popular tourist city in the world. There are many places in New York that are a must-visit. But, unfortunately, I only managed to visit some of them. I will start, perhaps, with that tragic place known to the whole world – World Trade Center, where the Twin Towers once stood. Two fountains, symbolizing the tears and pain of the American people, serve as a reminder of those events. I think that anyone who has had the chance to visit New York will definitely visit this place. World Trade Center And how could I miss Lower Manhattan, Wall Street, and Times Square? Despite my limited time, I couldn't help but go there, and also take the opportunity to see the Statue of Liberty with my own eyes. The Brooklyn Bridge, all lit up, which connects two parts of the city – Brooklyn and Manhattan – left a huge impression. The narrow street of Wall Street led us to the huge bronze statue of a bull, which is the unofficial symbol of New York's Financial District and represents strength and assertiveness. Everyone strives to touch it for financial luck, which, of course, we did too)) Nighttime Brooklyn bridge Times Square is the most popular place in New York. A stunning sight – lights, advertisements, crowds of people, boutiques, theaters – Times Square combines all of this. I was amazed by the four-story M&M’s store with huge capsules of colorful M&M’s candies. I also really wanted to visit Central Park, Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, but I didn't manage to… Well, that's a reason to return to New York and definitely see the rest with my own eyes ))) Times Square – pure madness M&M’s – that's what I love)

Such a free America

Do you ever get that feeling when you're overcome with nostalgia for a place so far away that it's hard to even imagine? I look back with such fondness on those sunny days as a J-1 student. My journey last summer went from indifference to incredible excitement, and all those memories remain in my heart. I was lucky enough to live at a country club. It didn't win me over right away; it happened gradually, and with each passing day, my friends and I liked it more and more. It had its own atmosphere—cozy and unique to us. I remember how every morning I would step out of our cabin, breathe in the fresh air, look at the tennis court, which was already busy at dawn, and scan for which coaches were working. Right there, next to the tennis court, we would gather almost every night to discuss everything that was happening, sharing experiences and thoughts. We often went to the beach that was part of our club, soaked up the sun, called our parents, and caught up with friends before heading to lunch. We had the opportunity to swim in a huge pool, walk all over the club grounds, and act like we were members. We also spent evenings on the beach when we just wanted to take a break from everything. Our club was located in a town that was just a forty-minute train ride from the center of Manhattan, so we could easily visit New York every day. At first, the city seemed quite dirty to me. A lot of things there are different from what they show us in movies, which are meant to brighten up the setting and give viewers the impression that this famous city, New York, is unreachable and incredible. It is interesting, mysterious, and, to my surprise, attractive in its own way. With each new visit to the city, I saw it from a new perspective, and during our last meeting, it revealed itself to me in a completely different way than it did on my very first visit. It became one of my favorites. All those skyscrapers drive you crazy. At first, we walked around looking up, not even trying to count the floors. We admired this stone city, the huge number of people around, and the constant noise of cars honking at each other. We were amazed by the free citizens who could organize their own rallies, shouting about their rights; we were surprised by the coexistence of Central Park in the very center of Manhattan and the huge stone high-rises around it, the number of homeless people along world-famous streets, and the special local color. We saw Times Square both day and night, a candy and chocolate shop with incredible flavors, the huge M&M's world, the old McDonald's, the famous Broadway, and all sorts of freaks. I remember how we held hands and ran through the crowd on July 4th, Independence Day, to make it in time to watch the fireworks from Roosevelt Island, and then we marveled at what was happening, full of joy. New York is a city so alive that it takes your breath away! Its lungs are Central Park, its heart is Times Square, and the constant stream of people running nowhere is its blood. And this entire boiling, restless city remains in my memory as something incredible.
