Residents who walk the elevated promenade between Brooklyn and Manhattan bypass transit delays, though seasonal wind and dense pedestrian traffic reshape the daily commute.
The cable-stayed suspension bridge forms the initial permanent crossing between Manhattan and Brooklyn. German immigrant engineer John Augustus Roebling drafted the master design to incorporate transit lanes beneath an elevated pedestrian promenade. The span operated under the name of the East River Bridge and the New York and Brooklyn Bridge before city authorities formalized the current title.
Before construction began, transit between both separate municipalities relied exclusively on ferry boats. John Augustus Roebling suffered a fatal tetanus infection after a ferry pinned his foot during site surveys, leaving his son Washington Roebling to direct engineering work. Political backing arrived from Tammany Hall figure William M. Tweed, who held extensive real estate across the path of the crossing.
