Pedestrians who commute past this monumental plaza trade quiet neighbourhood alleys for sweeping open skies and heavy vehicle traffic between the Tuileries Garden and the Champs-Élysées.
Royal architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel designed the open octagon between the Tuileries Garden and the Champs-Élysées, establishing the largest public square in the metropolis. Gabriel lined the northern perimeter with classical palaces inspired by the Louvre colonnade, creating administrative headquarters for the royal furniture depot and the naval ministry, known as the Hôtel de la Marine.
Political upheaval during the French Revolution transformed the space from a royal monument into Revolution Square. Revolutionaries seized artillery from the Hôtel de la Marine, dismantled the monarchist bronze effigy, and installed the guillotine near the gardens. Executions here claimed King Louis, Queen Marie Antoinette, and revolutionary leaders including Maximilien Robespierre during the Reign of Terror.
