À propos du lieu

The glass pyramid anchors the central courtyard as a subterranean gateway to the galleries.

Architect I. M. Pei designed the glass-and-metal structure in the central courtyard of the Louvre Palace as part of the Grand Louvre project. The main pyramid functions as a skylight and the primary entrance to the subterranean museum concourse. Low modernist triangular reflecting pools and fountains frame the perimeter, while smaller companion pyramids provide natural illumination to the underground reception hall.

Subterranean access galleries radiate from the central hall toward the separate palace wings, maintaining clear exterior sight lines through the overhead glazing. A companion inverted pyramid channels additional daylight into the subterranean walkways. Long-term residents crossing the plaza encounter steady security checkpoints and heavy pedestrian traffic, requiring timed transit routes around the courtyard perimeter.
