À propos du lieu

The Louvre Palace preserves royal art collections within a converted medieval stronghold.

The complex began as a defensive fortress commissioned by King Philip to guard against English forces holding Normandy. Urban growth eroded that military role, prompting monarchs to convert the structure into a royal palace. Francis started rebuilding the halls in the French Renaissance style, bringing masterworks like the Mona Lisa into the royal collection. Medieval masonry remains visible in the underground crypt.
