Commuters bypass the long street queues outside the former railway hall by slipping in from the underground transit tunnels, making the vast gallery spaces a regular retreat between studio shifts.
The museum occupies Gare d'Orsay, a Beaux-Arts railway terminus built for the Exposition Universelle on the Left Bank of the Seine. Saved from demolition when cultural authorities rejected plans for a replacement hotel, the structure was redesigned to bridge the artistic timeline between classical collections at the Louvre and modern works at the Pompidou Centre.
Architect Gae Aulenti arranged the galleries beneath the barrel vault atrium by framing former train platforms with stone partitions. This layout divides the cavernous central nave into discrete bays for sculpture and decorative arts. At the end of the aisle, an aerial model of the Palais Garnier opera house sits under glass flooring, demonstrating the urban transformation overseen by Georges-Eugène Haussmann.
The permanent galleries bring together painting, sculpture, furniture, and photography, centering on Impressionist and post-Impressionist collections. Masterpieces by Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, and Vincent van Gogh hang alongside the donated Marlene and Spencer Hays collection. Residents who return regularly find quiet viewing hours by navigating the upper terrace rooms while tour groups cluster below.
