À propos du lieu

The Bastille was a medieval fortification constructed to protect the eastern boundary of Paris before becoming a royal state prison.

Étienne Marcel and Hugues Aubriot fortified the eastern gate of Paris to shield the capital from English attacks. The resulting fortress featured towers and curtain walls raised to equal heights, creating a continuous walkway for troops and artillery. This design rejected earlier castle conventions and established a defensive model later copied across France and England.

The fortress controlled transit along Rue Saint-Antoine and provided a secure haven for French monarchs during internal rebellions. The crown established the neighbouring Hôtel Saint-Pol residence beside its stone ramparts, while later rulers converted the subterranean dungeons and upper vaulted chambers into a state prison. A revolutionary crowd stormed the site, leading to its demolition and conversion into Place de la Bastille.
