Waterloo commuters quickly learn to bypass the South Bank promenade on their daily walk to work. Sightseers waiting beneath the wheel clog the main pavement from midmorning until dusk.
Architects David Marks and Julia Barfield devised the wheel after observing transmission towers on daily commutes, seeking public panoramic views without building an Eiffel Tower replica. When a national competition for a millennium monument ended with no winner, the architects remortgaged their home to file plans with Lambeth Council. British Airways and international lenders stepped in after domestic banks declined financing.
Structural engineering from Arup anchored the design around tensioned steel cables resembling a spoked bicycle wheel. Fabrication crews floated individual rim components along the river on barges and assembled the framework flat on temporary piling platforms. Enerpac strand jacks hoisted the assembled structure upright, while contractors Mace and Hollandia managed civil works and structural steel installation.
Situated on the historic Festival of Britain grounds, the attraction draws heavy visitor crowds along the South Bank promenade. London Waterloo and Waterloo East provide rapid rail and underground links, with Westminster, Embankment, and Charing Cross reachable on foot. Commuters and travelers also access scheduled riverboat transit directly at London Eye Pier through Thames Clippers and City Cruises services.
