Residents near Plaça d'Espanya plan their weekend evenings around the fountain crowds, trading quiet movement along Avinguda Maria Cristina for the hill's open-air music and light shows.
Carles Buïgas designed the grand fountain at the foot of Montjuïc as the visual centerpiece for the International Exposition. The installation occupied the ground where Catalan nationalist columns had stood prior to their state-ordered demolition. Extensive wartime damage silenced the hydraulic basins for decades until Buïgas returned to supervise comprehensive mechanical repairs.
Preparations for the Summer Olympics prompted a full modernization of the cascades alongside the neighbouring national art museum. Sound systems joined the synchronized lighting, introducing orchestral film scores, zarzuela movements, and the local anthem by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé. The evening water displays run across weekends, drawing massive crowds that fill the avenue from Plaça d'Espanya to the palace.
