Residents who base their research on Montjuïc trade daily climbs past Plaça d'Espanya for quiet mornings in the palace library before crowds reach the terraces.
The institution brings together Catalan visual art inside the Italian-style Palau Nacional on Montjuïc hill, standing at the terminus of Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina near Plaça d'Espanya. The permanent galleries house Romanesque church paintings alongside Catalan design from modernisme and noucentisme. This complex ranks among the largest museums in Spain, drawing long-term researchers to its medieval and modern holdings.
Origins trace back to the Renaixença cultural revival, which prompted municipal efforts to safeguard regional heritage. Director Joaquim Folch i Torres unified disparate civic collections inside the palace before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. During that conflict, curators evacuated the masterworks to Olot, Darnius, and Paris to protect them from destruction, returning them later to split venues across the city.
Architects Gae Aulenti, Enric Steegmann, and Josep Benedito led a comprehensive renovation of the site, reopening the grand Oval Hall in time for the Summer Olympic Games. Today the institution supports specialized work through its library, coin cabinet, and department of prints and drawings, while the landmark building has appeared internationally as a setting in the video game Wheelman.
