Carles Buïgas engineered an illuminated landmark below the national palace.

Carles Buïgas designed the grand fountain at the foot of Montjuïc as the visual centerpiece for the International Exposition. Preparations for the Summer Olympics prompted a full modernization of the cascades alongside the neighbouring national art museum. Sound systems joined the synchronized lighting, introducing orchestral film scores, zarzuela movements, and the local anthem by Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé. The evening water displays run across weekends, drawing massive crowds that fill the avenue from Plaça d'Espanya to the palace.
