About the place

The State Tretyakov Gallery holds the foremost depository of Russian fine art.

The Tretyakov Gallery stands as the primary depository of Russian fine art in the world. Collector Pavel Tretyakov established the institution by acquiring works by Russian artists before donating the entire collection to the municipality. The gallery grew within a merchant family mansion, requiring repeated extensions as acquisitions filled the domestic rooms. Artist Viktor Vasnetsov prepared the drawings for the exterior façade.

Architectural expansion later linked the exhibition route with the Church of Saint Nicholas in Tolmachi. Builders constructed a dedicated hall specifically to house Alexander Ivanov's monumental painting depicting Christ before the people. During wartime, museum staff rolled canvases around wooden shafts, packed them in waterproof material, and evacuated the collection by rail.
