Alexander Garden channels daily foot traffic directly beside the Kremlin wall, turning its tree-lined paths into a brisk commuter route rather than a quiet retreat.
The park grounds consist of separate tiered gardens arranged in a continuous green band between the Moscow Manege and the Kremlin wall. Civil planners laid out the promenade directly above the channelled Neglinnaya River, which once flowed open through the urban core. For long-term residents, the linear layout functions as a paved transit corridor connecting central plazas, bordered by government battlements.
Before the underground culvert was built, the riverbanks hosted public folk festivals and fishing spots crossed by arched bridges. Following a destructive municipal fire, architect Osip Bove redesigned the cleared space into landscaped public grounds under an imperial recovery plan. Originally called Kremlin Gardens, the park was later renamed Alexander Gardens following an imperial coronation.
