About the place

The Kremlin Armoury preserves state regalia and royal collections behind fortress ramparts.

Royal artisans once worked on site until Peter the Great relocated most craftsmen to St Petersburg. The workshop subsequently absorbed the Fiscal Yard treasury, the carriage repository of the Stables Treasury, and the royal tailoring chambers. Alexander I designated the combined storehouse as the city's initial public museum, establishing the Kremlin complex as a permanent home for imperial coronation regalia.

The collection expanded substantially when Vladimir Lenin ordered items from ransacked imperial palaces transferred to the fortress vaults. Today the halls display masterworks including imperial Fabergé Easter eggs alongside ceremonial weapons and state carriages. Visiting the galleries requires clearing strict Kremlin security gates, making access dependent on official protocol rather than casual walk-ins.
