About the place

Commissioned by Ivan the Terrible to commemorate military campaigns, the complex stands outside the Kremlin walls as a multi-chapel museum.

The site operates as a museum on Red Square under the formal title of the Cathedral of the Intercession on the Moat. Ivan the Terrible ordered its construction to mark military victories over Kazan and Astrakhan, breaking Muscovite convention by dedicating shrines directly to warfare. Placing the stone project in the open marketplace outside the Kremlin walls asserted royal backing for commoners against hereditary boyars.

Masons from Pskov and German territories joined local crews to erect the original cluster of independent chapels on an elevated platform. Later renovations enclosed the galleries and linked the individual sanctuaries into a continuous temple. While popular folklore claims the tsar blinded the architect to prevent imitation, historical records confirm the builder continued directing major masonry works across the realm.

The common name derives from the holy fool Basil, who was interred on the church grounds and honored with an added corner sanctuary. Another local fool, Ivan the Blessed, was likewise entombed within the arcade. Engineers study the masonry vaults of these additions as a benchmark of early craft, demonstrating sophisticated vaulting that disappeared after subsequent political turmoil forced builders to rely on heavy, thickened walls.
