Florida Keys: o que há por perto, como chegar e quando ir · 2026

Living on this coral chain ties everyday logistics to a single two-lane roadway, where any severe storm forces complete evacuation back to the mainland.

Sobre o local

A low-lying coral archipelago strung between oceans, anchored entirely by a single highway.

The islands stretch between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, with Key West at the far western settled fringe. Life revolves around water trades and reef diving, but low ground elevation means seasonal tropical cyclones routinely trigger compulsory evacuations back along the causeways to the mainland.

Vehicular access relies on the Overseas Highway, constructed over the footprint of an earlier coastal rail line wrecked by a hurricane. The roadway spans bridges such as Seven Mile Bridge, where older surviving spans remain reserved for pedestrian access while vehicles depend on a narrow corridor subject to heavy collision rates.

Associações
  • Overseas HighwayThe sole roadway connecting the islands to the continent.
  • Stilt HousesElevated living quarters built to withstand sea surges and floods.
  • Hurricane EvacuationNarrow causeways create critical traffic bottlenecks during major storms.
Factos
  • The coral cay archipelago separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico.
  • A Category 5 storm in September destroyed the Overseas Railway, leading to its highway conversion.
  • High traffic on the predominantly two-lane highway produces the highest per capita fatal crash rate in the state.

Key West

Our next stop was Key West. Perhaps not everyone knows this place, so it's better to explain that the Florida Keys are a chain of islands in the south of Florida, and Key West is the southernmost of them. It was around 10 p.m. when our bus reached the last island. We gathered our things slowly, stepped off the bus yawning and stretching, and almost fell over! I stood on the steps, gulping down the air, unable to get enough. I wanted to dissolve into that sweet evening air... It was a mix of everything: the scent of flowers, the sea breeze, the warmth of the departing day, and the bitter smoke of cigars... For the first time in my life, I felt like I knew how to breathe. I don't know the best words to describe this place... Forget everything you knew about America and try to imagine a small island washed by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. Where the streets are full of Cubans selling coconuts and rolling cigars. Where they make the most delicious pie in the world – Key West Lime Pie. Where every evening on the waterfront, they celebrate the sunset with dances, shows, and fireworks. You can try to imagine it, but it's better to see it with your own eyes. Believe me, you'll find plenty to do there! #KeyWest #FloridaKeys
