Residents duck into the central semi-circular courtyard facing Grand Palais to escape surrounding avenue traffic during midday work breaks.
Architect Charles Girault secured the commission through an open design contest arranged to replace the outdated Palais de l'Industrie. Girault executed his original plan with minimal modifications, anchoring the site across from Grand Palais. The structure became the official Palais des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris. Its trapezoid perimeter encloses a semi-circular central courtyard that shields visitors from exterior traffic.
The exterior design draws directly on historical French traditions, incorporating specific architectural motifs from the stables at Château de Chantilly into the domed central porch and the triple arcade. Girault aligned the widest face of the trapezoid directly opposite Grand Palais. This orientation shields the semi-circular inner courtyard from street noise, keeping the central colonnade calm throughout the day.
