Wat Phra Sing anchors urban monastic life within the historic walled centre, maintaining active royal status and venerated Buddhist relics.

King Phayu of Lan Na established the monastery to inter the funerary ashes of his father Khamfu, brought south from Chiang Saen into a dedicated stupa. The complex originally carried the name Wat Lee Chiang Phra because of the civic marketplace operating outside its perimeter. The current name took hold after King Saenmueangma enshrined the sacred Phra Phuttha Sihing statue, which arrived from Chiang Rai via Kamphaeng Phet.

Prolonged warfare under the Burmese Empire left Chiang Mai deserted and its monastic buildings in complete decay. King Kawila began extensive restoration work once resettlement started, reclaiming the sanctuary as an administrative and spiritual anchor. Monk Khruba Siwichai later renewed the halls during a wider campaign to revive northern religious life, before King Ananda Mahidol granted full royal temple status.
