King Mangrai established Wat Chiang Man as the founding Buddhist temple of the walled capital.

King Mangrai erected the complex as the earliest Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai. Construction took place over Wiang Nopburi, an older fortified settlement belonging to the Lawa people. The monarch stationed his operational camp on these specific grounds while overseeing the survey and building of the surrounding capital city.
