Residents settling along the border between Parione and Regola trade residential seclusion for constant foot traffic funneled between Piazza Navona and Palazzo Farnese.
The square sits as an open rectangular space south of Piazza Navona, anchoring the border between rioni Parione and Regola. Its medieval designation reflects an era when the grounds lay open as an unpaved meadow. In antiquity, the expanse remained vacant land beside the theatre of Pompey. The clearing now stands diagonally southeast of Palazzo della Cancelleria and northeast of Palazzo Farnese, funneling pedestrian routes.
Paving projects under Cardinal Trevisani transformed the unbuilt ground during urban renewal efforts for rione Parione under Pope Callixtus. This initiative prompted major building campaigns in the immediate surroundings, leading directly to the reconstruction of the Orsini palace along the perimeter. Subsequent construction altered the district footprint, causing the church of Santa Brigida to face Piazza Farnese instead.
