Its medieval designation reflects an era when the grounds lay open as an unpaved meadow. In antiquity, the expanse remained vacant land beside the theatre of Pompey. The clearing now stands diagonally southeast of Palazzo della Cancelleria and northeast of Palazzo Farnese, funneling pedestrian routes.
