Pedestrians commuting between the Invalides and the Champs-Élysées cross this open span daily, timing their walks to bypass dense tour crowds gathering near the balustrades at sunset.
Engineers Jean Résal and Amédée Alby built the crossing as a low steel arch, working alongside architects Joseph Cassien-Bernard and Gaston Cousin. Strict urban planning requirements dictated the profile: the span had to remain low across the water to prevent the structure from obscuring sightlines toward the Invalides and the Champs-Élysées. Beaux-Arts masonry supports Art Nouveau streetlamps, cherubs, water nymphs, and gilded winged horses.
Inaugurated for the Exposition Universelle alongside the Grand Palais and Petit Palais, the structure honors Tsar Alexander following the Franco-Russian Alliance. Imperial heir Nicholas laid the foundation stone. Now classified as an official monument historique, the deck carries regular pedestrian commuters between government offices near the Invalides and commercial avenues leading off the right bank.
