About the place

Les Invalides stands as an immense monument to French arms, housing veteran quarters, military museums, and the crypt of Napoleon.

The French monarchy ordered the complex built to shelter disabled veterans, raising residential halls and clinics across the plain of Grenelle. Libéral Bruant planned the grid of internal courtyards, while Jules Hardouin-Mansart added the monumental Baroque church. A glass divide separates the military cathedral from the royal dome chapel, beneath the frescoed vault painted by Charles de La Fosse.

Parisian rioters breached the deep cellars to seize cannons and muskets before storming the Bastille. The royal dome later transformed into a national military pantheon to enshrine the crypt of Napoleon. Today the complex preserves extensive military collections within the Musée de l'Armée while continuing its founding mission as an active medical clinic and home for retired soldiers.
