Tenants on Boulevard de Clichy trade nighttime pavement quiet for immediate access to the steep alleys of Montmartre.
Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler established the cabaret at Place Blanche where Boulevard de Clichy meets Rue Blanche, right at the base of Montmartre. The founders designed the hall with adaptable staging to bring working residents, wealthy visitors, and painters together under one roof. An outdoor garden with a giant elephant statue welcomed patrons arriving for evening concerts.
The venue gained global fame through the energetic can-can dance, popularized by performers such as Jane Avril and La Goulue. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec documented these nightly routines on promotional posters, cementing the cabaret in European artistic culture. Belle Époque architect Édouard Niermans later redesigned the interior to incorporate seated dining concerts and grand musical revues.
