Office workers walk through the central concourse daily to catch trains at Grand Central Terminal without stepping onto the crowded avenues.
Conceived to monetize the air rights above Grand Central Terminal, the skyscraper occupies a central position on Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Architects Richard Roth, Walter Gropius, and Pietro Belluschi designed the tower in the International style. The colossal structure replaced a railroad baggage facility without demolishing the historic passenger concourse beneath it.
Early development sparked intense debate among civic planners and architects who feared immense street congestion around the terminal. The project succeeded competing proposals, including an unbuilt hyperboloid design, to deliver vast commercial office capacity. Today the tower connects directly to rail transit, allowing commuters to reach workplaces without entering surface street traffic.
