Tenants based in Midtown Manhattan trade quiet residential routines for relentless commercial density, spending their workdays inside massive corporate office towers and navigating the dense pedestrian flow of Lexington Avenue.
Citibank commissioned the office skyscraper to expand its corporate presence beyond Lower Manhattan, having previously operated from Wall Street and Exchange Place. Hugh Stubbins designed the tower alongside associate architects Emery Roth and Sons and structural engineer William LeMessurier. The Midtown structure provided dedicated commercial floors for the financial institution alongside expansive corporate office space.
Assembling the site required negotiating with Saint Peter Lutheran Church, an established congregation that owned the northwest corner of the block. Brokerage firm Julien J. Studley acquired surrounding parcels through secret transactions before arranging a condominium agreement. The congregation sold its building and air rights in exchange for funding and a modern church incorporated into the base of the new development.
