À propos du lieu

A metal arch now spans the earliest river crossing in the city, where wooden structures and stone arches repeatedly collapsed under commercial sprawl and winter floods.

Settlers maintained a river crossing at this exact point since tribal times under the name Grand-Pont. Invaders destroyed the ancient crossing during the siege of the city, leading to temporary timber structures and recurring washouts. A timber replacement ordered by King Charles featured uniform gabled dwellings on both edges. Heavy structural loads and neglected maintenance triggered a sudden collapse into the water.

Rebuilding under Fra Giovanni Giocondo established durable masonry foundations and vaulted arches. Rows of gabled brick and stone buildings transformed the roadway into a dense commercial market where homes received civic numbers before anywhere else in town. Art dealer Edme-François Gersaint ran his gallery here under a painted sign by Antoine Watteau. Authorities later cleared every shop to restore structural stability.

Subsequent stone arches created hazardous navigation channels, causing frequent rivercraft crashes that earned the span the nickname of Devil's Bridge. Engineer Jean Résal resolved the shipping bottleneck by erecting the current metallic arch, later inaugurated by Raymond Poincaré. Pedestrians crossing between quai de Gesvres and Île de la Cité now experience an unobstructed passageway devoid of historical clutter.
