Über den Ort

Wat Suthat ranks among the premier royal monasteries in Bangkok.

Construction began after ground was filled in at a low-lying site called Dong Sakae within Inner Rattanakosin. King Phutthayotfa Chulalok ordered the sanctuary built to house Phra Si Sakyamuni, a large bronze brought from Wat Mahathat in Sukhothai. King Phutthaloetla Naphalai carved the wooden doors of the vihara by hand, and King Nangklao completed the monastery grounds. The Giant Swing stands directly before the entrance.

The ubosot ranks as the longest ordination hall in the kingdom, enclosing court murals and the Maravijaya image Phra Buddha Trilokachet. Miniature chedi spires crown every door and window frame. Along the cloister wall, marble boundary shrines and raised alms-scattering platforms flank the courtyard. Behind the main bronze, a gilded limestone relief from Nakhon Pathom depicts the Great Miracle at Sravasti.
