Über den Ort

Wat Arun anchors the western riverbank with its porcelain tower and monastic quarter.

The sanctuary originated as Wat Bang Makok around a village named for local fruit trees, before King Taksin established Thonburi as the capital. It briefly housed the Emerald Buddha inside the palace perimeter until the court shifted across the water to Wat Phra Kaew. The central spire consists of brick coated in plaster and decorated with Chinese porcelain plates arranged into floral mosaics and guardian figures.

Living near Bangkok Yai reveals that the complex functions as an active monastic community rather than an isolated monument. Beyond the central tower, the walled grounds contain living quarters for monks, study halls, ponds, and stone statues of warriors imported from China. Long-term residents experience quiet morning courtyards before ferry passengers arrive, though narrow surrounding alleys face persistent pedestrian congestion.
