Foscari demolished the Byzantine fortress and shifted the foundations forward to touch the water, erecting a late Venetian Gothic palace that signaled his political supremacy and mainland campaigns. He barely saw the work completed before falling into disgrace and dying in his quarters. Centuries later, the building sheltered the French monarch on an upper floor before transitioning into the administrative seat of Ca' Foscari University.

A comprehensive restoration joined Ca' Foscari with the neighbouring Palazzo Giustinian, modernising the interior while safeguarding historic spaces like Aula Baratto and Aula Berengo. Stringent environmental retrofits later earned the complex a global LEED green building certification, marking the oldest structure in the world to meet those efficiency standards.
