Researchers working inside Ca' Foscari trade wheeled luggage and road commutes for canal boats and stone steps across Dorsoduro.
The site on the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro district originally held a Byzantine residence with two flanking towers. The Republic of Venice acquired that older property from Bernardo Giustinian to host visiting diplomats and military commanders, including Gianfrancesco Gonzaga and Francesco Sforza. When Sforza betrayed the Republic, authorities seized the estate and auctioned it to Doge Francesco Foscari.
Foscari demolished the Byzantine fortress and shifted the foundations forward to touch the water, erecting a late Venetian Gothic palace that signaled his political supremacy and mainland campaigns. He barely saw the work completed before falling into disgrace and dying in his quarters. Centuries later, the building sheltered the French monarch on an upper floor before transitioning into the administrative seat of Ca' Foscari University.
A comprehensive restoration joined Ca' Foscari with the neighbouring Palazzo Giustinian, modernising the interior while safeguarding historic spaces like Aula Baratto and Aula Berengo. Stringent environmental retrofits later earned the complex a global LEED green building certification, marking the oldest structure in the world to meet those efficiency standards. Today, academic seminars share the halls with cultural tour groups.
