Über den Ort

Regional diversity defines daily life across the peninsula, separating northern industrial hubs from southern agricultural communities.

The peninsula extends from the alpine frontier into the Mediterranean, flanked by the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. Production centers on specialized regional clusters rather than massive conglomerates, driving global exports in machinery, fashion, and automobiles. Relocating exposes a persistent geographic wealth gap. Northern industrial cities demand high living budgets, while southern towns maintain significantly lower housing costs.

Transit relies on extensive rail corridors. Competing high-speed operators connect major cities, while regional lines handle provincial commutes. Daily travel demands strict attention to ticketing rules. Station machines mandate paper tickets be stamped before boarding, and conductors issue immediate fines for unvalidated fares. City buses and trams demand purchasing passes in advance from neighborhood tobacco shops.

Daily routine revolves around rigid gastronomic traditions that surprise newcomers. Morning coffee is taken quickly standing at bar counters, while ordering milk-heavy espresso drinks past breakfast breaches local etiquette. Sit-down dining entails a mandatory table cover fee called coperto, and meals proceed unhurried without constant server check-ins. In the early evening, neighborhood bars host aperitivo, pairing drinks with complimentary buffets.

  • Transit tickets must be validated in stamping machines prior to boarding trains or urban transport to prevent fines.
  • Passengers must purchase bus, tram, and metro tickets beforehand at stations or licensed tobacco shops, as tickets are not sold on board.
  • Acquiring a long-term transit smartcard requires visiting a transit authority office in person with official identification, a portrait photograph, and an assigned Codice Fiscale.
2 weitere Regeln
  • Diners at sit-down restaurants are expected to order food alongside drinks, and soliciting complimentary tap water after being offered bottled selections is regarded as improper.
  • Declining an invitation to attend a business meal is considered an insult to professional hosts and colleagues.
Kleinigkeiten
  • Karten

Contactless card payments operate across urban public transit networks, including surface transit and metro turnstiles in major metropolitan centers.

  • Bargeld

The euro serves as legal currency across the territory.

  • Trinkgeld

Restaurants frequently add a separate cover fee termed coperto to the final bill, which exists independently of discretionary tipping.

Häufig gestellt
Do train and bus tickets require validation before boarding in Italy?

Passengers must validate regional train, bus, and tram tickets before boarding or immediately upon entry. Stamping machines are located on station platforms and inside public vehicles. Unvalidated tickets lead to fines during ticket inspections.

Quelle: Wikivoyage
Where are urban transit tickets purchased in Italy?

When is it customary to order cappuccino in Italy?

Local custom restricts cappuccino and other milk-heavy coffee drinks to morning hours. Ordering milk-based coffees after standard midday meal hours departs from local dining conventions. Patrons seeking coffee later in the day typically select espresso or macchiato.

Quelle: Wikivoyage
Is complimentary tap water served at Italian restaurants?

Restaurants expect patrons to order bottled water alongside their meals. Waitstaff typically present choices between still and sparkling bottled varieties. Requesting free tap water runs counter to local table etiquette.

Quelle: Wikivoyage
What is the Italian aperitivo tradition before evening meals?

The aperitivo is an early evening social custom centered on pre-dinner drinks at local bars. Establishments serve complimentary snacks or buffet spreads alongside cocktails and wine. Patrons frequently use this gathering as an informal substitute for an elaborate evening meal.

Quelle: Wikivoyage
Does Italy enforce a statutory national minimum wage?

Italy does not set a statutory national minimum wage through legislation. Baseline wages are governed by national collective bargaining agreements negotiated between trade unions and employer associations across separate economic sectors. Italian labor courts enforce these industry agreements to protect wage standards.

Which rail operators provide high-speed train service in Italy?

High-speed passenger rail is operated by the state-owned operator Trenitalia and the private competitor Italo. Trenitalia runs Frecciarossa services alongside regional lines, whereas Italo competes directly on major trunk routes connecting primary cities. Tickets for both services allow advance seat reservations through digital apps and station kiosks.

If you are going to San Francisco…

I have a special connection to San Francisco, so to speak. Whenever I hear the name, Scott McKenzie's song "San Francisco" plays in my head. And the lines: "If you are going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair..." I love this city; you know, it's not your typical American city. Yes, it has skyscrapers, huge traffic jams, cool cars—the list goes on forever—but it's different. The people there are different, somehow; they are kinder, they strive for something, they are constantly growing. And the weather, for me, is just perfect. It's +20 all year round; sure, it could be a bit warmer in summer and colder in winter, but that doesn't change the overall vibe. San Francisco reminds me of Italy in some way. I highly recommend visiting the "Palace of Fine Arts"; then you'll understand what I meant. The architecture there is incredible, and the houses around it also look more European. And if you are traveling as a couple, I recommend a romantic spot called "Shoreline Park." It's actually in Silicon Valley, but it's worth it. Most importantly, bring some food and a blanket; I can tell you for sure, there is plenty to enjoy there, especially at sunset. Of course, don't forget the most important places like the Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, Lombard Street, or Twin Peaks. They are a must-visit. I've been to San Francisco twice; apparently, I fell in love with it so much that I returned a second time. I ended my first trip to this city with a hike to "Lands End," and you know, I had only seen such scenery in pictures on the internet. At that moment, tears involuntarily welled up in my eyes, and I felt very sad that in a few hours I would be leaving. For me, it was the perfect place in every sense. And seeing the waves crashing against the rocks is a mesmerizing sight. On my second visit, I dedicated a whole day to the tourist town of Santa Cruz. It's about a two-hour drive from San Francisco, maybe less. For me, it was like a little Los Angeles—the same palm trees, the same beach. You won't believe it, but the weather was even +35, which is very rare for Northern California. You can get there by car or by bus. If you are traveling with a group, order an Uber or Lyft and go for it; it won't be expensive, but if you still want to save money, the bus is also an option. To be honest, I could go on for a long time because I love this city. I want to keep some places as my personal memories of San Francisco. I advise you to visit the places mentioned above. I promise you, you won't be left indifferent.

DAY 5 - TRAVELING AROUND THE USA

California is a major wine producer. It produces about 90% of the country's grapes and over 80% of its wine products. The first vineyards in California appeared in the late 17th century, but viticulture only began to develop 100 years later, when Europeans brought 300 grape varieties (about 100,000 seedlings) to California. Is it really that good? We decided to go and check for ourselves. The closest wine region to San Francisco is Napa Valley. It is considered one of the best wine-producing regions in the world. The most interesting part isn't the wine itself, but the fact that we never actually tasted it)) Forgetting about the wonderful law that applies in every state—alcohol is only allowed for those over 21 (we are 19)—we just watched our bus neighbors tasting wine and headed to the vineyards themselves... After spending over an hour in the bushes (each grape variety grows separately there, and we tried almost every one), I can say with confidence that each one clearly differs in taste from the next (obviously). More acidic grapes make drier wine, and sweeter grapes make sweet wine (obviously [1]). What's interesting is that they ask for $35 and up for a single bottle, whereas in Italy, we bought insanely delicious wine for $2. A total rip-off 🤷🏼‍♀️

traveling through cities

Impressions can vary depending on how you travel. If you do as I do—wandering and exploring the concrete jungle—you can find plenty of adventures, both amazing and frightening, see the non-touristy side of cities, meet diverse residents, discover hidden spots, and truly feel the city's spirit. For example, in San Francisco, even without delving into history, you can feel the free spirit of the hippies, while in Los Angeles, you encounter grotesque diversity. America is as varied as the nationalities that inhabit it. You can travel from China to Italy, or even return to Russia for a while, tasting dishes from different cuisines prepared by true experts who know the exquisite nuances of cooking. Sometimes recipes blend into something unimaginable, like a pumpkin milkshake with hummus. Where else could such a drink be born if not in America, this melting pot? And then there is the fact that the USA is the second country in the world after Italy in its love for pizza. A pizza party is thrown for any reason: a successful work period, a Christmas substitute for a corporate party, or a birthday. After all, it was here that it was modernized (like many other national dishes) to suit the universal American taste: Chicago-, New York-, and Detroit-style pizza. Hence the pizza prints on pajamas, t-shirts, and stickers on Instagram. The trip is useful not only for program participants discovering a new country but also for Americans themselves, who learn about other worldviews through cultural ambassadors from other countries—us. It is important to constantly remember that we are representatives of our country, and we will be judged by our actions. By the way, I always thought that American movies and TV shows were cardboard and fake, that people don't talk like that in real life, and that actions and lines are pretentious and artificial. I attributed this impression to the staging, the pre-written script, and the polished reality of films, but it turned out that the characters behave so unusually not because of puppet-master screenwriters, but because of the difference in mentalities! In reality, people in America behave exactly like that, and sometimes you are even surprised by the cinematic nature of a scene seen on the street or a conversation overheard by chance. American culture is a global culture. Hollywood—the dream factory—sets the tone for world cinema; American films are presented in almost every cinema in the world, shaping our worldview and adjusting our habits and behavior. US music also has a colossal influence on world culture. Spending 4 months there will definitely help you better understand a culture that seems familiar to everyone since childhood, yet doesn't seem all that colorful, and realize that it is, in many ways, different from established perceptions.

Unforgettable trip and study in the UK, London

The picture shown above was taken in Cambridge town near well-known Cambridge university press. As the UK is very popular with such historical places as Cambridge University. I understood only one thing, this is that London is actually tremendous city which needs more than a week in order to visit all three parts of London, precisely city, west, and east parts. The best days of my life I spent with keenly nice and helpful people in the academy. I enjoyed my studying whilst I was in the UK. It was extremely catching to share your experience and knowledge with the students from different countries and nationalities. In my group I was lucky to make friends from Wales, Canada, Arabic emirates, Iran, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Italy , Spain, France, Lithuania, Thailand, chili, and Mexico.

New York City

All adventures begin and end here. As much as I didn't want to leave Boston, my flight to Moscow was departing from New York. I knew perfectly well that after the Pearl of the North, even the Big Apple might seem less appealing. Maybe I was wrong. Accommodation wasn't an issue—I could stay with a cousin of an acquaintance. The problem was something else: getting there with a huge suitcase and a backpack. Especially since I remembered all too well how I messed up last time, paying 10 times the necessary fare in the subway. Tip: READ the subway car signs CAREFULLY. Just because you are on your line, unfortunately, doesn't mean all trains go where you need to go. Even a train running on your line might not stop at your station. After leaving my things at my acquaintance's place and washing up, I set off in search of free Manhattan fun. Must-see/visit: - Central Park; - Brooklyn Bridge; - Chinatown; - Little Italy; - Broadway; - Times Square at night; - Staten Island Ferry; - Brighton Beach. In Chinatown, there are people who were born in this neighborhood, lived and worked there, and died there, never leaving the area and never knowing English. Consequently, explaining or asking anything from such people won't work. This can play into your hands: I got lucky and, right in front of these people, I left without paying for fixing a couple of errors in the menu. When I was in New York, there was some kind of fair going on in Italy, so I was able to see a few Italians. But in general, Chinatown is growing very fast and slowly but surely is swallowing up Little Italy. Don't be lazy; take a walk down Broadway and head down to Wall Street, then to the water itself, where the free Staten Island Ferry departs. Not only will you sail past the Statue of Liberty, but you'll also get a stunning view, first of Manhattan, then of New York and Jersey City. It's worth it. Tip: Midtown is full of signs like "Pizza for 0.99". In reality, this pizza costs a dollar, but it's still very cheap (the only thing cheaper is at "7-Eleven", where it's $2 for 2 slices, but both with toppings). Sit in Central Park in the evening. Just sit under a tree after a long day or lie on the grass. Listen to what the city residents are talking about. Walk to the lake if you can't sit still. If your hands are still reaching for your gadget, you can delete unnecessary photos and admire the good shots. Drink some water, look around—you are in a forest, in a real jungle inside a jungle. Gather your strength—ahead is the nighttime Times Square and 5th Avenue. When the sun sets and night falls, only one place in New York shines as brightly as it does during the day—that's Times Square! Crowds of people, bright advertising billboards, and actors dressed in costumes of favorite characters—all this creates a special atmosphere. If the prospect of being in a huge crowd of people doesn't excite you, take a walk along 5th Avenue and visit (or maybe buy something there) world-famous stores like M&M's, Hershey's, NBA Store, as well as expensive boutiques. Tip: If you are interested in shopping, head to "Century 21" in Brooklyn. A huge clothing and footwear store with famous brands at quite reasonable prices. The remaining time can well be spent visiting the American Museum of Natural History (which closes at 5:30 PM). And please, since you are in New York, don't make my mistake—go up to the Empire State Building and look at New York from the wind-swept observation deck. Back then I regretted the $29, now I'm ready to pay twice as much just to go back there and not miss the opportunity. Tip: Don't regret the $29 and go up to the Empire State Building observation deck. Brighton! Just take a trip to this street and look at the Russian-language store signs, "Moya Semya" juices, candies with the mysterious name "Korovka", "Adjika" spices, and the funny "Tarkhun" soda. Looking at the eternally rushing pedestrians and the cars constantly yielding to them, looking at the painfully familiar-lo

How to protect yourself from killer mosquitoes

Letter from August 28. Sender: Anastasia Lebedeva, Dallas, Texas Recipient: Yulya Keda, Kazakhstan How to save yourself from killer mosquitoes. Hi, Yulka! You won't believe what happened to us! Today we were supposed to be wandering the streets of New Orleans, but guess what, we are still in Dallas. And why? Let me start from the beginning. Nora turned out to be a very friendly, energetic, and interesting person. She lives in a quiet neighborhood near the lake. She has two dogs – a boy named Derby and a girl named Mabel, whom we were initially afraid of. Nora is an avid traveler. She has been to Mexico, Italy, China, and France. She is planning to visit Argentina and other countries. In her free time, she visits a Buddhist temple, yoga classes, rock climbing, and goes kayaking. She also plays the guitar and loves watching travel shows. She listens to blues and country. That's a mini-dossier for you. In just a few days, she showed us all of Dallas! We visited real American diners, listened to the chants of Buddhist monks, went to the movies, and didn't miss the museums! We learned a few words in Thai. For example, the greeting 'sawatdee'. And we tasted Thai food. We went to the lake and took photos. We saw George Bush's house. At least that's what the locals say, but no one has ever seen him there. At first, we were afraid to go to the lake because of mosquitoes – carriers of a deadly virus. We put on hoodies, sneakers, and jeans. Everyone asks us: where are you from? And we say: from Florida – the Sunshine State. And now for the most important thing: Linkin Park was AWESOME. Yes, we were at their concert! Chester is singing and screaming just a few meters away! There were both new and old songs, which we couldn't have imagined at all. Everyone is singing along, and we are the loudest! Craaaaaaaaaaaawling iiiiiiiiiiiin my skiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin! These wooooooooooooooooounds, they wiiiiiiiil not heeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaal!!!!!!!! The photos turned out pretty good, and the videos too. We couldn't have imagined before that we would get to a Linkin Park concert! Amazing! So many positive emotions! Live sound! We rocked out! Rock on! Filled with bright hopes and charged with positive emotions, Nora and I went to the Greyhound station. We had tickets for 3 AM. After saying a warm goodbye to our new Texan friend, we had a snack and got ready to check our luggage. Suddenly, it turned out that our bus to New Orleans was canceled! Shock. The reason was the approaching Hurricane Isaac. We had to stay at Nora's for one more night. We hope to leave on the next bus. We will write when we get to New Orleans! Good luck! Adios! #travel #LinkinPark #Dallas #NewOrleans #adventure

Let's get acquainted. I'm Tatyana, 20 years old. I'm a biology student at Astrakhan State University. This is my second exchange (the first one was to Italy). A few years ago, I couldn't have imagined that I would be studying in Switzerland. A few years ago, I couldn't have imagined that I would be studying biology. A few years ago, I couldn't have imagined that I would want to dedicate my life to science. But life is an amazing thing after all. Sometimes you fall in love with what you couldn't stand before. Although... there is a certain charm in that. I can say that these were six magnificent months. Now I'm already packing my suitcase and in three days I'll be back in my homeland. But... I already miss it. I already want to return. And I've already promised myself to do everything to make that happen. What will I be writing about? About my daily life. About the problems relevant to students planning to conquer this small but very proud Alpine country. About the Swiss and their outlook on life. About my travels outside of Switzerland. About the University of Geneva and studying there. About the fact that in a foreign country, there is only you. And no one else. There are no parents to help. There are no professors who, with the phrase: "Well, okay, you're an honors student...", turn a blind eye to everything. But there is a foreign mentality, a crazy exchange rate, and responsibility. So, how it all began...

A little bit about the food here

I am a proponent of healthy eating. It's rare that I manage to eat properly, especially with all these travels and new places, but I try. Right now, I've switched to a healthy eating mode. Here in Africa, it's very easy (if you resist the restaurants, which cost about the same as eating healthy at home), because even the supermarkets have a ton of healthy food. The most common ones are SPAR and WoolWorth. WoolWorth is considered quite expensive. Most products are made in South Africa, and many people here are into eating right and staying in shape; you can feel it immediately. Only now did I realize how rarely you see truly overweight people here. The supermarkets are filled with an insane amount of fresh fruits and vegetables, especially exotic ones like pineapples, mangoes, and avocados, all at relatively low prices. For example, today I bought 2 slightly-smaller-than-average pineapples and paid 20 rand. These were the sweetest pineapples of my life. In Italy, I get hooked on tangerines; here, I feel like a pineapple period has started in my life. A mango costs 7 rand on average, and my favorite cherry tomatoes are 10 rand for a 200-gram pack. By the way, you can buy pâtés made from exotic animals right in the supermarket: for example, zebra or crocodile. Yesterday we tried zebra pâté. It's just like any other pâté. But again, buying groceries for home costs about the same as eating in restaurants and cafes. And the restaurants here are incredibly tempting: Italian restaurants run by Italians (like the one I work at), restaurants with authentic African cuisine (and an incredible variety of animals whose meat you can try there), as well as restaurants that offer the freshest seafood, and, of course, sushi. Well, there you go. I made myself hungry. I'm going to go boil some beets...
