Über den Ort

San Zaccaria stands just off the Venetian waterfront as a former monastic church bridging Gothic masonry and early Renaissance design.

The Republic of Venice erected the monastic church in Campo San Zaccaria, positioned southeast of Piazza San Marco. Master builder Antonio Gambello began the structure following Gothic traditions before Mauro Codussi took over the project. Codussi completed the upper interior and the stone facade with classical columns and rounded window arches, producing an architectural transition from late Gothic into early Renaissance craft.

Doge Giustiniano Participazio originally established the religious foundation to house the relics of Zechariah, sent to Venice by Byzantine Emperor Leo the Armenian. Those remains rest beneath an altar on the right side of the nave. Down below, the stone crypt holds the burial vaults of early Venetian doges. Outside, an ancient campanile rises beside Campo San Zaccaria, separating the quiet sanctuary from waterfront crowds.
