Morningside Heights shelters New York's oldest university, shaped by colonial roots and urban shifts.

King's College began under a royal charter from George II on Trinity Church property before the American Revolution intervened. Armed conflict forced instruction to halt entirely while military units commandeered the main building for hospital wards. Following the British evacuation, state lawmakers renamed the school to affirm loyalty to the fledgling republic.

Urban expansion pushed the institution north from Park Place to Midtown and ultimately to Morningside Heights under Seth Low. Affiliated developments followed, including Barnard College after the central administration refused admission to female scholars.
