Residents cross the central plaza daily between errands in the old walled city, treating the historic landmark as a natural meeting point rather than an isolated tourist stop.
The bronze figures represent Phaya Mangrai, Pho Khun Ramkhamhaeng, and Phaya Ngammueang, who formed an alliance to establish the capital of the Lanna Kingdom. The allied rulers chose this location between the Ping River and the heights of Doi Suthep for its fertile plains and defensive geography. Sculptor Kaimook Chuto designed and cast the statues, which royal family members later inaugurated during formal civic ceremonies.
The open square facing the monument functions as a public gathering ground rather than an isolated memorial. The paved space hosts official cultural festivals, municipal assemblies, and neighborhood events throughout the seasons. Long-term residents use the surrounding courtyard as a familiar orientation point, though the constant flow of festival preparations and civic foot traffic periodically closes off adjoining roadways.
