Gran Teatre del Liceu stands on La Rambla as an opera house financed entirely by private shareholder funding rather than royal patronage.
Founded as a music school in a former convent, the institution relocated to a former Trinitarian site on La Rambla when space ran short. Unlike royal European opera halls, the house relied on private shareholders who bought lifetime rights to auditorium boxes, private clubrooms, and commercial shops. Because the monarchy provided no capital, the architects omitted the traditional royal box from the main tier.
