Residents living beside La Rambla trade nighttime quiet for immediate access to evening performances. The pedestrian thoroughfare stays packed past midnight, leaving little calm outside the auditorium doors.
Founded as a music school in a former convent, the institution relocated to a former Trinitarian site on La Rambla when space ran short. Unlike royal European opera halls, the house relied on private shareholders who bought lifetime rights to auditorium boxes, private clubrooms, and commercial shops. Because the monarchy provided no capital, the architects omitted the traditional royal box from the main tier.
A severe blaze gutted the interior, sparing only the front facade, the entrance hall, and the Hall of Mirrors. Architect Josep Oriol Mestres directed the reconstruction, restoring the venue to its original performance role. Political unrest later struck the auditorium when an anarchist hurled explosive Orsini devices from the upper balcony, leaving casualties and empty memorial seats in the stalls.
