The stronghold was commissioned as a secure royal residence for Emperor Paul I under the joint direction of architects Vincenzo Brenna and Vasily Bazhenov. Known also as Mikhailovsky Castle and Engineers' Castle, the structure took its religious dedication from Saint Michael the Archangel, the patron saint of the reigning dynasty. The estate combines defensive palace planning with formal state quarters in the historic core.
