Palace Bridge links Palace Square with Vasilyevsky Island through a cast-iron bascule structure designed for road vehicles and foot traffic. The mechanical spans lift during the night, which halts road transit and makes walking between these districts impossible until morning. An American engineering firm developed the lift machinery, while a French company handled assembly after earlier temporary pontoon crossings were phased out.
